They didn’t have much time, and whatever was left of it would be spent watching this giant devour first one of them and then the other.

Let me go first, he thought. I can’t handle the sound of that thing eating again, especially at this close of a range.

Guerra looked around, looked for anything that might give him a chance against this thing, a chance to—at least—cut away the nylon ropes holding him in place.

Seeing nothing, Guerra turned his attention back to his compadre in this little adventure.

“You mentioned something about getting us out of this mess,” Guerra said, trying to interrupt his own negative self-talk. “Now would be a good goddamned time for it.”

“Give me a minute,” she replied.

The girl sounded like she might be meditating—or focusing. He hoped she was focusing on how to get this thing the hell out of his face.

He tilted his head back to get a good, hard look at the tentacle, holding his breath all the while. It was not entirely out of fear and not entirely because of the smell, but it was a healthy combination of both. A blasphemous, ungodly stench.

The stench of dead bodies.

Only, there was something infinitely more violent and unsettling about it. The fact of how the bodies had met their ends gave the smell a stark note of reality, of pure, unadulterated terror.

And that note was clear: Death is before you.

This is death personified.

One of the creature’s tentacles bellied toward him, the tip peeking closer to him as if testing the water for some more audacious, openly threatening gesture.

Why be so coy? he wondered.

He had seen the thing tear through the ship like it was made of paper and cotton.

It was almost like the thing recognized Guerra and was taking certain pleasure in a slow kind of revenge on him.

Guerra expected at any moment for the tentacle to latch onto his face with its grubby, sucker-filled appendage and drag him down into its mouth, full of needles and Go knew what else.

He tried his best to hold his chin up, to sit in a kind of defiance of the thing, but he was having a hard go of it.

“Any time now would be good,” he said, his voice a choked whisper as he struggled to get his mouth around the words.

One of the beast’s appendages wound around Guerra’s ankle, slowly at first—almost seductively. Encircling him up to the calf. Working its way up.

The diplomat wanted to scream, but he didn’t.

He had to trust the girl. It was all that was left. Trust for Beatrix and nothing else.

Under the weight of the tentacle, his ankle throbbed again. Almost like a sentient pain. Like it knew just how bad the situation would get if it just…tensed up.

From behind him, Beatrix began to speak.

A language he’d never heard before—which was impressive. Guerra was accustomed to flying all over the galaxy and hearing people speak, but this was entirely new to him.

He didn’t know exactly what she was doing—or attempting to do—but the effect was immediate.
